What is Joseph H. Pilates' method?

Joseph H. Pilates' method of exercise is a system of physical fitness that has been around for over 75 years. Joseph H. Pilates' system of physical conditioning consists of deep stretching and controlled resistance movements, using the abdominal muscles as the stabilizing center of the body while developing strength and balance. The method consists of more than 500 exercises that are performed as a mat-based workout or using special resistance equipment developed by J.H. Pilates. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the 'core' - the deep abdominal muscles and spinal muscles as well as concentrating on free joint movement.
